JOHOR FLAG SYMBOL OF JOHOR SOVEREIGNTY

The Johor flag has always been sovereign. In colonial times, the flag was always flown higher than the Union Jack – the British flag. This was the wisdom of the Sultanate of Johor to ensure the sovereignty of the Johor sultan and land would always be preserved and protected. Johoreans in particular should appreciate each philosophy behind the moon and star symbol and colours of the flag.

The white moon and star symbol represents the religion of Islam and the Sultanate of Johor. The red colour represents the heroism of the Johor people in protecting the Johor state. The dark blue colour reflects the universality of the state government. In a simple sense, the Johor flag is the symbol of the sovereignty of the HM Sultan of Johor, the heroism of the Johor people and the universality of the Johor state government. More specifically, the Johor flag is the symbol that encompasses the monarchy, the people and the state government.

Due to the Sultanate of Johor’s brilliance, in 1885, the United Kingdom agreed to sign an agreement with Johor, in which it would be recognised as an independent state capable of running its own administration. That was why British officers assigned to Johor only acted as consultants instead of advisors like in other states in Malaya back then. And due to that, the Sultanate of Johor at that time could choose to ignore high-ranking British officers’ opinions in the state’s administration during the colonial era.

Those two factors above were the reason the Johor flag was flown higher than the Union Jack during the colonial era. It means that the sovereignty of the Sultanate of Johor and the Johor land has always been respected by the British even in the colonial era.

FAKTA MENARIK | SEJARAH NEGERI JOHOR | BENDERA JOHOR LAMBANG KEDAULATAN NEGERI JOHOR

Bendera Johor sangat berdaulat.
