KOICHI KEEPS IT PITCH-PERFECT FOR JDT

Local daily New Straits Times published an interview with Johor Darul Ta’zim FC groundsman Hiroi Koichi on the maintenance of the pitch-perfect Tan Sri Dato’ Haji Hassan Yunos Stadium field along with nine other fields, including those at training grounds and the new Sultan Ibrahim Stadium.

The Japanese pitch expert credited HRH Tunku Mahkota Ismail Ibni Sultan Ibrahim, Regent of Johor for the impeccable surface, saying: “Tunku Ismail is so passionate about maintaining the quality of the field. I often tell him that the grass could feel his passion, which is why it grows so well. If Tunku Ismail is not so demanding on maintaining a good quality field, maybe we would not be able to achieve this recognition.”

Hiroi, as he is referred to in Johor, explained that the Larkin ground had to first improve the drainage system and soil condition before transforming to what it is today. Hiroi now manages a team of 30 staff for 10 fields and three tests are conducted on six parts of the field before every match – grass height, ball roll and ball bounce.

“A good quality playing field is not only important for players to play well and show their skill but also in preventing injuries, which is a fear for all players and coaches,” he told NST.
