The 2017 Malaysia Cup began on August with a preliminary round. A total of 16 teams took part in this prestigious competition. The teams are divided into 4 groups of 4. The group leaders and runners-up teams in the groups after 6 matches qualify to the quarterfinals. Kedah are the defending champions.
In this competition, the top 11 teams from the First Round of 2017 Malaysia Super League is joined by the top 5 teams from the First Round of 2017 Malaysia Premier League. The teams will be drawn into four groups of four teams.
